Introduction to Physical AI

Weeks 1–2 | Foundations of Embodied Intelligence

This section introduces the core concepts of Physical AI — the study of artificial intelligence systems that interact with and operate in the physical world through robotic bodies. Unlike purely software-based AI (chatbots, image classifiers), Physical AI must perceive, reason about, and act within real, unpredictable environments.

What Is Physical AI?

Physical AI refers to AI systems embedded in physical agents — robots, autonomous vehicles, drones — that must:

  • Perceive the world through sensors (cameras, LiDAR, IMUs, force-torque sensors)
  • Reason about spatial relationships, physics, and human intent
  • Act through actuators (motors, grippers, legs) with real-world consequences

The humanoid form factor is particularly interesting because it allows robots to operate in environments designed for humans — offices, homes, factories — without requiring infrastructure modifications.
